OFFICIAL THREAD POST #1
I will be posting all future updates to this thread.
UNNECESSARY LEGAL STUFF: All pictures used in this particular post are from a movie owned by Sony Pictures Animation. I do not claim rights to any of these screenshots, and they are only here for illustrative purposes.
So, I'm going to start off by listing a lot of boring dimensions that I calculated for the FLDSMDFR.
I mainly used these pictures to calculate the scale:
In the above picture, Flint is seen holding a 2-inch paintbrush. That, plus the dimensions of a standard electrical outlet, shows me that the black line running along the bottom of the machine is 2 inches wide. After I realized this, I used that measurement for finding the measurements of nearly everything else.
The above image showed the legs of the machine, so I used it to help me calculate the leg parameters.
So, based on the dimensions of an eight quart colander that I found online, plus the dimensions measured from the movie, I came up with these measurements:
Height of main body w/o colander: 12.375"
Height of colander: 6"
Height of legs when flat on surface: 8"
Width of main body at top/Width of colander at widest point: 13.375"
Width of main body at bottom: 16"
Width of output hole: 7"
Front panel width: 10"
Basic top-down shape: Rounded hexagon w/ single-side favored distortion
After all this, I drew up a life-size blueprint on my family's whiteboard. Once I get a colander, the dimensions may vary a little, but it is important that I find a metal one with a diameter of 12-14 inches, not including the handles.
For the internal structure, I am thinking of right-angle steel or aluminum, which will support the internal electronics, as well as the walls, legs, and bottom of the machine. Stuff like this needs to be strong, yknow?
Internal electronics will include:
All necessary switches, lights, and knobs, (hopefully) all fully functional
An 8" disco ball ("Radiation matrix: secure!")
An old laptop screen that I will turn into a monitor for the machine (I hope I can find the laptop that I have in mind o_o)
A bright LED flashlight that will shine out of the output hole of the machine
OKAY: HERE'S ONE PLACE WHERE I NEED FEEDBACK. I have been debating whether or not to curve the sides, like in the movie, or have them pointy and angled. The latter method certainly would make the metal forming process easier, especially with bending the colander. Metal is hard to work with. Especially when it's a colander that's curved. Both ways. xD Please tell me what you think.
For sheet metal, I have an old water dispenser from my church. I would also need sheet rubber for the rubber "finger" things that cover the output hole, and I might find some accordion-style rubber tubing for the beginning of the legs. And so that the lights from the disco ball are able come out of the lower hole as well, I decided to place mirrors along the inside that will reflect around half of the disco ball lights downward and out of the hole.
The machine will be powered with 110V AC power via a custom-made male-to-male extension cord. An internal transformer will lower the power so I don't burn out the LED lights, although the 110V current will power the disco ball.
I have detailed pictures of the flavor control panel from the building scene. But here's where I run into complications: I managed to determine the labels for most of the various controls, but there are THREE that have evaded me. Here are the ones that I have so far (Not including the front panel):
Knob in back: SUGAR
Slide lever on right side: ZESTINESS
Phone port: WELCOME TO MOOSE [return] PORT
(I think that the above label was a joke on the film "Welcome to Mooseport". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to_Mooseport I have not seen the film, nor do I endorse it in any way.)
(HELP OPPORTUNITY HEEEEEER:) Here is a picture of the three controls that I cannot get any labels on:
(The ones on the left side.)
If you happen to have a Blu-ray of the movie (Did they release one of those for CWACOM? I don't even know!), and would be happy to go frame by frame through all the FLDSMDFR scenes and locate labels for these, that would be very nice. If not, then I will just have to leave these controls blank.
So, that's going to conclude Official Thread Post #1. If you can, please provide feedback where requested. Thanks for your time!
