Why did Flint bite through the licorice rope? And why did he say "Goodbye, Sam"

Because he had to go face the himself, and he didn't want Sam to keep waiting for him, possibly causing her death due to her peanut allergy.

Flint knew that if Sam had continued on with him she would have probably died from her anaphylactic shock, most likely by suffocation, which wouldn't have been nice at all. I think he said "Goodbye" just in case he never saw her again, as he probably had a decent idea that it was going to be dangerous facing the .

The thing is, the licorice was tied around his waist so he had less chance of falling. After all, when Sam dropped him, he let go anyway. And he probably didn't take the time to untie himself because it would have taken too much time.
