I like this movie but I hate that monkey character. Out of all the characters in the film, he has to be the worst. And this is coming from somebody who generally loves animals.
Everywhere he goes, he's always causing trouble, wrecking buildings, ripping off Tim's hair, and even made Flint cry. He's just a cruel jerk. He set off his party in the box in the middle of a ceremony, got people laughing at him and it was all on television. This made Flint cry, what's even sadder is that this is a similar experience to him embarrassing himself in front of his classmates while showing off the spray on shoes so this brought up some feelings for him. I wanted to hug him, I hated seeing my favorite character so upset.
I'm not a monkey person so I don't know how wild they can be, I know that they are playful and mischievous but they are wild animals so it makes no sense that Flint carries him around everywhere he goes where he could bring trouble. They could've replaced him with a cat, which is what Flint should've put the thought translator on in the first place since cats, while playful, are more quiet and docile animals.

Steve is pretty much the only friend (to call him somehow) Flint had for a long time before he met Sam and befriended the others (even if he knows that he's just a monkey), is not like he can dump him as if nothing happened because it's not just his pet but his friend.
Yeah he can be quite annoying sometimes but that was made on purpose back in the day because they didn't want to make him an anthropomorphic character and decided to go by a natural side. And if it wasn't for his wackiness, Manny would've ended up crashing nearly the end of the first movie and Brent and Sam would've died as a consequence, and in the second movie it's thanks to him and his thing with the word "celebrate" the reason of why none of Flint's friend ended up being turned into food bars.

Mmhmm!
That, and Steve being such an atypical animal is also reflective of Flint's own atypical thinking.

It’s a movie aimed at kids, bro. Monkeys are funny and it aint that deep. I like Steve. You are free to have your opinion but I really hate when people pull the "It's for kids" excuse for bad writing in a film. Yes, kids films tend to have animal sidekicks but a lot of them serve no purpose and only exist for jokes as is the case for Steve. He overstays his welcome and does hardly anything in the film besides making jokes. Also if Steve is going to be a wild animal then why are they so insistent on keeping him around in the first place? I'm not saying the film should be complex and dark and mature because that's not what it's trying to go for it and it's fine as a light-hearted, simple, feel good comedy but not all of the writing is good. I still love the film but it's not perfect and it shouldn't be treated like it is just because it's for kids.

I feel you're still failing to understand that Steve is Flint's best friend more than just a sidekick or a pet. He was alone nearly his entire life (if not counting the series) and the whole monkey thought translator was also his attempt to have somebody to talk to (and that's even according the directors and the art book), even if he's just a wild animal, he's all he has until he befriended the others.
